Hello! It’s only a few weeks into my time among you as part-time, Interim Vicar of the United Benefice of Barrowford and Newchurch-in-Pendle and already I have received the most fantastic welcome from the congregation and local parishioners.
Although not a complete stranger to the Parish (I spent part of 2017 supporting St Mary’s after the retirement of Canon John Hallows, RIP) it’s a blessing to have the opportunity to get to know the area, its residents, its stories and history more deeply.
Finding my way down narrow country lanes to make wedding and baptism visits, meeting children and staff at our wonderful local schools, engaging with …
[ READ MORE → ]The Barley Remembrance Service was very well attended again with the weather being kind this year, wreaths were laid on behalf of residents by Cllr John Connor, a wreath was laid by Borough Councillor Martyn Stone and our vicar Kathryn Heyworth gave us a reading. The new flagpole gave us chance to fly the “Lest We Forget” flag the few days before Remembrance Sunday and we flew the Union Jack, as designated by government protocol, on the day itself. Most then went back to the Chapel afterwards for tea and scones and a catch-up.
The next big event is the “Barley Classic Christmas Fayre” on …

Join us to turn on the Newchurch village Christmas lights, sing a carol or two, whilst enjoying a mulled wine. Then stick around to meet our special guest, Father Christmas himself.
All activities will take place in the centre of Newchurch-in-Pendle, and the event is kindly sponsored by Anthony Dawson Real Estate.
Tombola and refreshments available, tickets for Santa £2.
Drains and trees have been the issues on the agenda during this otherwise very quiet month of November. Given that Mother Nature in November has blessed us with some persistent if not heavy rain and high winds it is no surprise that many of our drains and gullies have been overwhelmed. Contrary to popular belief the task of maintaining and clearing these is down to Lancashire County Council and not our local Borough Council in Pendle. I think that it is fair to say that LCC do seem to take too long to get around to them (28 days seems to be their target) if …

Thank you Friends of Newchurch and Zilpah at EQ Woman for organising the amazing Fashion Show and the continued support of our school. Also thank you to Anthony Dawson Real Estate for sponsoring the event and the Pendle Inn for hosting. So far they have raised £1491!
St Mary’s had a fantastic time raising money for Children in Need, the children and staff came to school in crazy clothes and facepaints. Parents were also invited to join the fun and dress up for Celebration Assembly. In total the school raised £124.69.
The Yr 3 and Yr 4 children have been participating in the school Athletics and have …

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone for taking part!
If you have any neighbours or friends that have just moved to the area, or who might not be aware of this newsletter, please can you mention Parish News to them. We’re now on 720 email subscribers across Barley, Newchurch and Roughlee so are definitely reaching the majority of households, but it’s an ongoing job to let people know when there’s no longer a physical copy being delivered and not everyone will see the adverts on noticeboards. Thanks for your help!

Rustling. The sound of the leaves in the wind. Watching them dance. Working out which way is North – during the day or night. How can you ‘feel’ this season? All of the above maybe!
Here are a list of wonderful ways to find North:
