Pendleside Community Climate Change Action Day 4th May
Beacons not Bystanders
It all started with an idea of Father Paul’s to hold an event on climate change and environmental issues. The seed was set and meetings convened, involving people from local churches and interested residents. Hoping the event will inspire local action we are setting up a free community event on 4th May at St Thomas’ Church, Barrowford (taking advantage of the larger venue).
The day starts with a keynote address by a national expert, followed by a programme of workshops and activities. We will hear about the Trawden experience setting up and running community services, a case study from Simonstone will illustrate what can be achieved by community action and we will find out how Whalley installed a successful hydropower unit. The Forest of Bowland National Landscape and Ribble Rivers Trust will outline their work and inform us about their climate change plans. We will also learn about the exciting developments at Gazegill Organics along with details of their approach to soil health. This fits in well with the session on bees and a practical workshop on composting.
There will be people on hand to discuss heat pumps and electric bikes to try. While practical sessions will look at eco-friendly products and how we can reduce plastic waste.
Not to forget children’s activities – lots of make and do, building a 3D installation and a fun treasure hunt. The final session in the afternoon is an opportunity to ask questions and find answers during a panel discussion with experts and political representatives.
The event will end with live music, dancing and food in the form of a free ceilidh including supper. Lovely Asian street food will be available to buy at lunch and refreshments will be on sale during the day.
Watch out for the full programme and details about how to book your free ticket in the April edition of Parish News.
We need to raise £1,500 to put on this free community event, so please help by making a donation online here.
