St Mary’s Newchurch

Coffee & Cake, Noticeboards, New Vicar, Safeguarding...

Just a brief update from St Mary’s this month as we have all been away.

The free hospitality events, held on one Sunday a month have proved very popular (free cake and coffee/tea, and what lovely cakes!). The next one is on Sunday 22nd September, 2.00-4.00pm.

Inside the church we have lovely new noticeboards. We still expect to have the grills in the floor by the entrance, a new noticeboard in the church porch and a replacement notice board by the gate, and an extra cabinet and shelf in the kitchen in the next few weeks and then it is all completed. It has been a long …

Summer BBQ, 20MPH, Footpaths and Vacancies...

While the weather hasn’t been kind to us over the last month (and the summer in general), the rain kept off on the afternoon of the 10th August, for the community barbeque.

It was lovely to meet up with many old friends and new, and the efforts of the volunteers was very much appreciated.

Special thanks to Carl Ryder for fixing the replacement swings and seats for the children, which got well used on the day, and everyone who brought such a fine array of cold food to go with the rest of the barbeque.

It was very encouraging that the August meeting of the Parish Council …

Roughlee Parish Council

Best Kept Village final, Waste Bin, Fireworks...

Despite our concerns earlier in July we have got through to the final of the Best Kept Village competition alongside Brindall (near Chorley), final judging was due to take place during week commencing the 19th of August. I know that I am starting to repeat myself, but we wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for the large band of Volunteers who give their time (in bags full) to keep the village looking so “special”. A big shoutout should also go out to those that have been painting and refurbishing the white railings near the river. It’s out of our hands now, but …

Duck Race, FORA Celebration (19 Oct), Fundraising...

The RVCC will not be holding its annual Duck Race on September 7th due to a big joint 60th booking for a villager at the centre. Sadly we can’t reschedule for later in the month due to holidays that most of the committee are taking, but the Duck Race event will return with a vengeance in 2025.

As most of you will be aware the Friends Of Roughlee Appearance FORA efforts have enabled Roughlee to get into the final two villages of Lancashire’s Best Kept Village 2024. This is for the third year in a row – results will be announced on October 15th and hopefully …

Barley Village Hall

Renovations, Curry Night (7 Sept)...

Barley Village Hall has recently completed the installation of new flooring in its downstairs corridors, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the space. The upgraded flooring, chosen for its durability and easy maintenance, is a significant improvement over the previous surface, which had shown considerable wear over the years. This renovation is part of a broader effort by the village hall committee to modernize the facility, ensuring it remains a welcoming and comfortable venue for the community’s diverse events and activities.

In addition to the renovations, the Barley Events Committee is excited to announce its upcoming Curry Night, scheduled for Saturday, 7th September at …

Keeping East Lancashire in the Picture

‘KEEPING EAST LANCASHIRE in the Picture’ is a new two-year Lancashire Archives and Local History project that will make the wonderful collections of historic photographs in East Lancashire Libraries more accessible.

▼ The cottages on the right, by the river were built for weavers working at Narrowgate Mill. Their date of construction is not known, but is likely to be in the early nineteenth century. The majority had only two rooms and when the mill closed in 1967 they were deemed to be ‘sub-standard’. Saved from demolition they have been renovated, the original 10 dwellings being converted into 5 new cottages and are now in occupation. The white building in the distance is Nattow Gates House, (shown as Lower Narrow Gates on the 1894 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map). The licence plate on the car on the left dates the photograph to later than 1977.

Bowland Lecture 2024

A Closer Look at the Region's Celtic Past - 1st Oct, 7.30pm

Browsholme Hall’s Tithe Barn will be the setting for an early autumn lecture delivered by Neil Whalley on the evening of Tuesday 1st October.

In his talk, The Celtic history of the North West, Neil will trace the history of the ‘Celts’ in the North West, from their European origins to their eventual disappearance, exploring their language, religion, literature and legends, and looking at what they left behind.

The Celtic past in North West England is fascinating but, according to Neil, often overlooked. Fragments of evidence from history, archaeology and literature help us piece together a world of ancient gods and tribal territories, and a medieval warrior …
