When our children were younger they used to start singing Christmas carols somewhere around the 15th of October, or so it is in my memory. By the time it got to December they were desperate to put up the Christmas tree and decorate the house. They would say ‘It’s Christmas now Dad.’ And in my memory I would patiently explain that ‘No it isn’t Christmas yet, it is Advent’. Apparently in their memories this conversation wasn’t so patient or gracious!
In any event this time of Advent is often lost to many of us. It’s supposed to be a time of expectant waiting. A pregnant pause …
[ READ MORE → ]Our annual remembrance service graced us with a bright and clear day and it was good to have over 50 people attending. It was wonderful to hear the brief histories of all those whose names appear on the Barley Memorial stone read out by Angela Hargreaves; where and when they died and how young they all were, brought to life the sacrifice they made for us. Thanks to Nigel Turpin, who used his passion for ancestry to provide us with some background of those named. The vicar conducted the short service and John Connor laid a wreath for the Parish Council along with representatives of …

This month sees the Christmas Festival on Sunday 8th December, with the Christmas lights being switched on at 5PM followed by a visit from Father Christmas. Tickets still available from Laura Standring or Hailey Hermansen.
In previous years the Parish Council have not met in December, but we will be doing so this year, and are providing Mulled Wine and Mince Pies, on Monday 9th December in St. Mary’s Church from …
[ READ MORE → ]Storm Bert has just passed us as I write this and compared to some parts of the country we have got off very lightly. The snow and ice that preceded him did cause its usual problems on Blacko Bar Road and rest assured that we are once again making a nuisance of ourselves with the relevant authorities. The flooding outside of the Bay Horse Pub struck again with its associated problems, regarding this one, we are in contact with the Environmental Protection Team at Pendle Council to try to exert some more additional pressure on United Utilities. Both of these problems are not easily …
[ READ MORE → ]At the Village Centre we have a vey busy month ahead of us in December. First I would like to thank Graham Hill for hosting the very successful Witch Wines event and the ‘angels’ who served wines and nibbles. In the last week we have had a generator fitted with funds of the Storm Anwen grant – this will allow the centre to be used in times of prolonged power cuts. Parish Chair Martin will have notified you of this in his comments above.
Our December events will be kicking off on Saturday 7th. Santa Claus arrives at 3pm till 5pm, grotto and stalls inside, our …
[ READ MORE → ]It’s been a busy month at the Village Hall over November. We’ve been finalising details for the new LED lighting that we’ll be having fitted throughout and have been engaging with the PC about a nice outside Christmas surprise that should be seen in the coming days! Saturday 16th November saw the Hall hosting the 40th Tour of Pendle Fell Race in the village. This event is run by Clayton Harriers and is one of 4 fell races throughout the year. This is the longest race of the season and a good opportunity for the Hall to raise some funds for reinvestment. This year we …
[ READ MORE → ]A handful of our junior children were invited to attend the Cidari Moon Conference at Blackburn Cathedral, they had an amazing day admiring and reflecting about the moon with Mrs Nightingale. Most of the schools in our Cidari Multi-Academy took part and it was a great way to meet new friends. Each of the children took part in a different activity around a big question about the moon with children from other schools. Reverend Ben led an opening worship where we learnt about how God created the moon by hand and crowned us all with honour and glory. Bishop Philip encouraged all of the children …

▼ Roughlee – Stanley Bracewell Collection (n.d.). The lower end of Pasture Lane from Stang Top Road. The bridge over Pendle Water is at the bottom of the photograph, by the sign post. Just to the right of the photograph is the former mill lodge for Judson’s Mill (demolished in 1961). In the early 20th century the lodge was a boating lake and pleasure gardens, it then became a trout fishery.
