Climate Change Action Survey Results

82 responses received - thank you!

A big thanks to everyone who participated in the recent Pendleside Villages’ Survey on Climate Change. 82 responses to the survey were received, representing approximately 10% of the combined populations of Barley, Roughlee and Goldshaw Booth, which is deemed to be a statistically significant response.

An overwhelming majority of respondents (78%) were concerned about climate change, with 51% very concerned and 27% fairly concerned. 15% of respondents were not very concerned and 6% were not concerned at all.

Respondents report taking a range of individual actions to lower their carbon footprints and improve environmental sustainability, with practically all respondents recycling household waste (99%), minimising energy use at home (95%) and avoiding or limiting the amount of food being thrown away (93%).

Approximately two thirds of respondents (62%) try to use as little water as possible and just under a half (48%) consider walking or cycling instead of using a car for some journeys. A third of respondents try to fly less and consider the energy efficiency of products when making a purchase, and just under a third (28%) aim to use public transport wherever possible.

The survey contained 11 community actions that could be explored as ways of reducing our collective carbon emissions, and for each, respondents were asked if they thought the idea was good and whether they would be willing to use or participate in the initiative.

Tree planting, community recycling facilities and green energy schemes were the three initiatives that received the highest levels of support for being good ideas, with 78%, 74% and 71% support respectively. Of these, respondents reported that they were most likely to participate in/use community recycling facilities (51%) followed by green energy schemes (43%) and tree planting (41%).

Community composting, community shop/café, plastic free communities and community allotments were each well supported as good ideas by approximately two thirds of respondents, but of these the idea of a community shop/café received the highest proportion of respondents saying that they would participate/use such a facility at 48%.

The least favoured ideas to tackle climate change in Pendleside were thermal imaging cameras to identify heat loss from homes (39%) and additional electric car charging points (37%), and of these two, more people said they would use the thermal cameras (20%) than would use electric car charging points (11%).

Respondents were asked for any other ideas and many of these answers could be grouped under a transport theme: improving public transport, car sharing schemes and repairing potholes.

Finally, 10% of respondents expressed an interest in getting involved in a Pendleside Cross Village Climate Action Group which is extremely encouraging and a public meeting to launch this group is planned for the Spring. The results of this survey will be shared with the three Parish Councils to help shape future environmental actions and priorities.
