Barley Parish Council

Barley Chapel, Barley Lane, Business Directory...

Many will recall that the Chapel held an emergency meeting back in August to discuss the difficult situation it was in. Over 40+ residents attended and there was much discussion regarding what could be done to save the chapel from being closed and sold for development.

The first target was to get thirteen full members of the Chapel to reduce the risk of closure by the Methodist Circuit – this has been achieved and there are now seventeen members. The next step has been to look at ways of solving the problems that have been identified within, and outside the building including the assessment of the timber decay in the roof which is thought to be dry rot.

Following the August meeting a ‘Friends of Barley Chapel’ group has been formed tasked with finance management, fund raising and carrying out essential maintenance works. In early April, Storah Architecture will undertake a full building survey which will provide more detailed information of the building condition and the task ahead. Fund raising will get underway and events are planned on VE day plus an event at the Pendle Inn on 17 May. I am pleased to report that the Parish Council has just made a donation of £1300 and there has been a donation from the late Reverend John Sutcliffe to get things going. There is still a long way to go before the future of the chapel is secured but we are underway.

As reported previously, the Parish Council have been lobbying the County Council regarding some highway improvements required on Barley Lane. We have had a site meeting with them and this led to some urgent pothole repairs in mid-February and last week works started at the top end of Barley Lane installing new road gullies and pipes in the lay-by area. New granular fill is being imported to level out the lay-by and carriageway edge repairs will follow. Funding limits mean we will not get what we want but there will be an improvement.

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Barley Parish Business Directory, a local initiative aimed at supporting businesses within our community and helping residents find trusted local services. This directory features businesses based in Barley or recommended by residents, serving as a modern-day local guide, much like an old-fashioned Yellow Pages.

If you own a business or know of a great local business that should be included, please email us with the following details:

  • Business Name, Address and Phone Number
  • Website (if applicable)
  • Type of Business (e.g., pub, shop, plumber, etc.) with a brief description of the business

Send your submissions to james@retailremedy.com

Last week I was in contact with the County Council’s Parking Enforcement Team to encourage more visits to Barley now the weather is improving and visitor numbers rise. They were seemingly receptive and so we might see more of them around through the summer. The Parish Council were also able to assist the police using our CCTV cameras to identify a visitor whose dog had been attacking sheep.

Finally, congratulations to Stuart and Aimee on the birth of their baby boy Greyson. Stuart was our host at the Pendle Inn for many years and will be well remembered by many residents. Although he has moved on to new pastures, I am sure you will join me in wishing them the best for the future.
