St Mary’s CE Primary School

Playground Proms, Trips, Workshops, Talks & Leavers...

We have enjoyed a very busy summer term.

PCSO Alan came into school to talk to our Years 5 and 6 pupils about keeping safe whilst they are out and about, especially during the summer holidays and what to expect when they start high school. It is good for the children to receive a gentle reminder that even though they feel like they are growing up, it is still okay for them to talk to a trusted adult about things that do not feel right.

Mrs Bell and Mrs Finch had the pleasure of meeting our new EYFS children during home visits, prior to their Stay and Play sessions in July. All of the children quickly settled at school and we are very much looking forward to welcoming them and their parents into our school family in September.

Pupils, parents and grandparents enjoyed the Playground Proms event organised by the Lancashire Music Service. The children dressed up in red, white and blue to get into the spirit of ‘the last night of the Proms’ and were totally engaged and inspired by a string quartet. The musicians played happily to their audience, demonstrating that playing an instrument with friends can be a lot of fun!

We all enjoyed a non uniform day to support the Friends of Newchurch Cake Sale and Tombola Stall. The event was a great success, raising funds for school resources. Thank you to the ladies of the FON for organising the event and all the parents and grandparents who came along to support.

Mrs Stevenson and Mrs Nightingale accompanied the Year 6 pupils to the Blackburn Diocese Year 6 Leavers Service at St George’s Church, Chorley. The service was led by Bishop Phillip and Lisa Fenton and was a celebration of all the children had achieved, as well as looking forward to the future.

The Infant children thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Cltheroe Castle. Working alongside the museum staff, having a picnic lunch and a ride on a double decker bus being the highlights!

We were blessed with the weather for Sports day. Fun was had by all – even parents participated! Very well done to the winning house – Gryffindor.

Mrs Stevenson and her class enjoyed an Ancient Egyptian Workshop, led by Aari, a scribe. He performed a mummification and talked through the steps of the procedure – which wasn’t as gruesome as it sounds! The children played ancient games in order to experience what life was like for the Egyptians. The children also had to build a city and act as Pharaoh to decide which features would withstand natural disasters. Using reed pens and ink they wrote their names in hieroglyphics. A fabulous day was had!

The junior children were invited into St Mary’s church to make crowns and crosses in preparation for the annual Rushbearing Festival. As always they enjoyed creating such beautiful crowns and crosses out of rushes and flowers. Thank you to the Flower Fairies. Everyone enjoyed the Rushbearing celebrations in the sunshine. Congratulations to the new King and Queen.

The Year 6’s had a fun packed day at the Chill Factore. The day started with an hour’s skiing lesson, followed by another hour’s snowboarding lesson. After lunch they had fun in the snowpark, sledging, snow tubing and on the ice slide. Some very tired children and staff returned to school that day!

To support the literacy topic, the infants came to school dressed as pirates. They brought into school their homework projects, which was to make a pirate boat or treasure chest. Parents and grandparents came into school to join in the fun and to celebrate all of the children’s wonderful creations.

Once again the school community was entertained by the juniors playing their musical instruments and singing songs. The ensemble was led by their music teacher, Mrs Carol Bradley.
It was lovely to see how much they have progressed during the school year.

Finally, we had to say goodbye to our gorgeous Year 6 pupils. All of them have been excellent role models for their peers, carrying out their duties as the Pupil Leadership Team with aplomb. We will miss them greatly, but wish them all the very best for the future. We also had to say goodbye to the Chair of Friends of Newchurch, Mrs Laura Standring. Mrs Standring has been a real powerhouse when organising fundraising events for school. The whole school community thanks Laura, she will be missed.

We hope everyone enjoys the summer holidays and we will see you all again on 2nd September.
