I start this February newsletter by sending our love and thoughts to the family and friends of a visitor to Barley who sadly passed away during their stay here. By all accounts the Barley Mow Family (both staff and customers) responded amazingly with every effort possible; local residents with medical backgrounds offered support and our Parish Councillor John Connor quickly accessed the village defibrillator. Warmest wishes and take care to all those affected.

[ READ MORE → ]2026 started apace for Goldshaw Booth Parish Council and as we write this, it’s incredible to think that January has already nearly passed!
The first thing in the Parish Council’s inbox was the finalising of the annual budget and we are pleased to report that the precept (the supplementary amount added to your Council Tax bill to fund essential local services and community projects) will not be increasing this year, in fact will be decreasing by 3%. This is for a number of reasons: the procurement of more cost-effective services (in particular the use of the lengthsman scheme and Pendle Borough Council mowing service) and the …
[ READ MORE → ]At our meeting in January, we discussed and agreed the budget for the forthcoming financial year commencing in April.
The main area of discussion focused on village maintenance and gardening. For many years (longer than I can remember), we have benefited from the cost savings associated with the “Lengthmans Scheme”. Unfortunately, this scheme has now lost its council funding and is therefore no longer as attractive to us as it once was. We have also been affected by the lack of a FORA lead to coordinate these activities.
As a result, we are at an advanced stage of making our paid gardener’s role more attractive by offering …

Spring is on the horizon and we have a busy year in the Village Centre planned. The big event for your diary is the MUSIC, BEER and GIN FESTIVAL will be held over the weekend of 5-7th June. Our charity for 2026 Derian House Children’s Hospice being the beneficiary of the event.
This will be the highlight of our summer, but it takes a lot of work and effort to make it successful. Anyone who would like to sponsor Beer, Gin or Food or even the entire show please contact me. Offers of labour are always welcomed by the team over the busy weekend and …

These excellent results are due to the outstanding teaching and learning provisions we are able to provide here at Roughlee, and the fantastic staff we are very fortunate to have. But more importantly, it is due to the wonderful partnership we have with our families and the phenomenal children we have the privilege of teaching. Pendle Hill Museum CIC is pleased to announce the launch of the online exhibition of WORK/LIFE: Photos from Workers at Play in Roughlee, Barley & Newchurch 1900-1980. If you missed the physical exhibition last month, you can now view it online here.
WORK/LIFE is funded by Historic England’s Everyday Heritage programme. Focused on picturesque villages at the foot of Pendle Hill – Barley, Newchurch-in-Pendle and Roughlee – WORK/LIFE explores how families from local mill towns travelled to the countryside for relaxation, and how this transformed these tiny villages into rural leisure destinations for workers between 1900-1980.
