Barley Parish Council
Walks, Playground, Toilet Block, Precept...
I start this February newsletter by sending our love and thoughts to the family and friends of a visitor to Barley who sadly passed away during their stay here. By all accounts the Barley Mow Family (both staff and customers) responded amazingly with every effort possible; local residents with medical backgrounds offered support and our Parish Councillor John Connor quickly accessed the village defibrillator. Warmest wishes and take care to all those affected.
Upcoming dates for your diaries are the 7th February for the annual Pendle Way in a Day and the 7th March for the annual Stan Bradshaw Fell Race. Start times on 7th February are 45 mile walkers 7am, 45 mile runners 8am, and 30 mile all entrants at 10am. Please see their respective websites for further details and plan your journeys accordingly.
Those of us who use the playground – or more accurately our kids do – have hopefully noticed that the gate locks are now working after the original ones were repeatedly broken/ vandalised. Barley & Wheatley Booth Parish Councillors are currently liaising with local businesses and Pendle Borough Council to get the best value for money on the carpet maintenance. This will deal with the moss and general wear and tear ready for the spring and summer months.
In addition to playground maintenance, Parish Councillors and local resident Robert Baines have kindly been volunteering their time to work on the toilet block improvement project. This is just about complete; there is some masonry pointing and painting work to be finished in the spring. The picture shows the new gable to gable pitch roof and flat roof, new windows and the new green cladding and black fascia and barge boards etc. Inside you will find new cubicles in both toilets, a new floor and new urinals in the gents along with some drainage, electrical and cosmetic improvements. The aim of the project was to ensure the Parish Council is providing a functional and safe car park toilet facility for everyone for many years to come.
This highlights the importance of Parish Councillors and many local residents who volunteer their time and skills to keep Barley Village running as beautifully as possible. If you are able to support with maintenance, litter-picking, gardening or anything else please contact the Parish Council. A huge thank you to those who already do this.
A bit of good news to end with: I think residents will be happy to know that, given the positive financial position, Parish Council members agreed to continue the Barley with Wheatley Booth tax precept at zero for 2026. Have yourselves a lovely February.
