Vicar’s Letter

Farewell and a prayer

Last month I spoke about the mystery of the Trinity and this month I’m thinking about time which seems appropriate as my time as Vicar of Barrowford and Newchurch in Pendle is coming to an end.

When Mike and I arrived (from the other side of the Pennines no less… Yorkshire born and bred!!) in October 2017 we were made very welcome.

The Bible has over 140 verses about time, one of the most famous is Ecclesiastes 3:1 ‘There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens’. (NIV)

As humans we attempt to order our lives and make plans but sometimes God …

Barley Parish Council

Annual Parish meeting, maintenance, balsam bashing...

The Annual Parish meeting attracted almost 50 residents in early June and there were presentations from the Women’s Institute (Claire Grimshaw), the Village Hall (Sarah Hartley), the Chapel (Angie Hargreaves), the Barley Events Committee (Lee Hunt) and myself on behalf of the Parish Council. The Council was able to introduce the new Councillors and reflect on some of the key events over the last year including the introduction of permanent parking restrictions, parking enforcement on the Turning area and the successful application by residents for permit parking. We also discussed the major projects completed including the Village Green Drainage and Footway plus the car park …

Goldshaw Booth Parish Council

Dry stone walling, Summer Fair, crime updates...

Firstly, a massive thank you to Howard Hartley (Lancs. County Councillor) for getting stuck in! Howard demonstrated dry stone walling to our very own Frank and between them they repaired the Newchurch park boundary wall – well done both and THANK YOU!

There is re-modelling work ongoing at St. Mary’s church. The creation of a more flexible indoor space plus toilet facility means work is necessary for drainage. This will be joined to the village drainage in Newchurch park and is funded by the Church.

The Friends of Newchurch School are at it again (well done Laura and Team!) raising funds for the school. The St. Mary’s …

Roughlee Parish Council

Parish Gathering (3 July), FORA, Blacko Bar Rd closure...

June has been another busy month for the village both in terms of social events and village issues. The first event was the Music, Beer & Gin Festival which proved to be a great success with the profits being split equally between the charities of Prostate Cancer and the British Heart Foundation. Well done and thanks to all of those involved. The second event was the Pendle Pub Walk which once again from a financial point of view was hugely successful with profits being split equally between Pendleside Hospice and our own Village Centre. However, when taking into account some of the problems this …

Roughlee Church of England Primary School

Summer Fair, History & Geography Week, Rubbish Day...

It was fantastic to be able to hold our annual Summer Fair again following the pandemic. Our families enjoyed a range of outdoor games, a tombola, face painting, some delicious food and our famous ping pong plunge. The Summer Fair is an invaluable source of fundraising for school so thank you to everyone who donated prizes and their time to make the Summer Fair another huge success. Thank you again to the Bay Horse and the Village Centre for allowing us to use their car parks. We look forward to doing it all again next year!

At school we regularly do ‘themed weeks’ and the children …

72 Seasons

27 June - 1 July: The Scent of Roses Fills the Air

There are over three hundred species of rose, though it is argued by some horticulturists that some of the species are so similar to one another, that they could in fact be a variation of the same species. Roses are used in a number of different ways, such as for perfume, in food and drink and in medicine, among others. Smell a rose, let the floral scent wash over you. Does it trigger any flash memories? Do you have a favourite rose?

72 Seasons is a creative project, which can encourage a deeper connection to nature and improve wellbeing at the same time. In addition to …
