Roughlee Parish Council

Reporting highways issues, planning updates, lengthsman...

Our annual parish meeting attracted more than 50 residents in early July with some new faces (to me at least) present. There were presentations from the Village Centre (Glen Watson), the local PCSO (Alan Fielding), both Lancashire County and Pendle Borough Councillors (Howard Hartley and David Gallear), the Roughlee Pantomime team (Stuart Applegate), the FORA team (Meg Davey and Ian Mortimer), the Pendle Radicals from Mid Pennine Arts and myself on behalf of the Parish Council. The PC and VC team were able to introduce a new Councillor and reflect on some of the key events over the last year including the new patio doors enabling a one level access to the centre, new lighting and media equipment, new toilet block and safety railings to name a few. These improvements were made with the help of funding from Pendle BC, the FCC communities charity and the Village Centre. One of the main points that the PCSO and Councillors raised was the one of reporting incidents. i.e “if they don’t know it’s broken or there is a problem they cannot fix it”. As a result we have put links on the Contacts page and the Roughlee website to enable everybody to access them if and when required. The evening finished with music from The Real Village People and some splendid wine and nibbles. Thanks to everyone that attended and to Mary for doing the organising.

The question of applying for a 20mph speed limit was raised throughout parts if not all of the village, we would greatly appreciate any further feedback on this subject please. Further grants for this current financial year have already been requested, so watch this space for future developments.

July has been a relatively quiet month for the PC with just items on the planning front, with the school applying for a canopy in the playground and one other house extension in the village. Another hole has appeared on the car park at the back of the VC and we are currently in dialogue with Pendle Council to get this resolved. As you read this you will probably have encountered the full road closure near to entrance to Crowtrees. It is unfortunately inconvenient but necessary to repair the damaged wall. Let’s hope they can stick to the 6 weeks timescale allotted for the job. The more astute of you may have spotted that we have had the white lines moved back to their existing position after the resurfacing of the road at the top of Pasture Lane.

I have had no news bad or good on our progress in the BKV competition, so keep up the good work and keep our fingers crossed. On a similar note, I have been asked a couple of times by residents how we allocate areas / tasks for our Gardener and Lengthsman to complete. This I will raise at our next PC meeting, however, I know that they are not an infinite resource, as we have budgets to stick to, and they are here primarily to support us with the tasks that we as the PC and you as residents struggle with. So, please, if you see an area that can be improved or made to look better, have a go and shout for assistance if it proves too big or difficult.
