Over the recent months we have seen a great deal of change at St Mary’s through the building work and the way we see the church as much more of a community space. The narthex has provided us with a more flexible, usable space and we look forward to showing you around!
Cherish Your Churchyard: We have an amazing churchyard, full of history and beauty, with the most magnificent view creating a wonderful place to sit and ponder. However, you are rarely alone for long due to the constant stream of visitors from all over the world. During the Gardening Club sessions we can spend more …
[ READ MORE → ]The Annual Parish meeting attracted over 50 residents in early May and there were presentations from the Women’s Institute (Sarah Hartley), the Village Hall (Tom Cosway), the Chapel (Angie Hargreaves), the Barley Events Committee (Lee Hunt & Jayne Harthan) and myself on behalf of the Parish Council. All contributors were able to reflect on some of the key events over the last year and their plans for the coming year; it is always fascinating to hear of things you had no idea about.
The Council presented an update of parking restrictions introduced in to Barley over the last two years to address congestion and inconsiderate parking …

We were absolutely delighted with the turnout.
We are really grateful for residents contributing their thoughts and ideas to start to shape the Parish Council’s priorities for the year which include three key commitments:
The meeting was followed by cheese, wine and Kathleen’s famous overnight tea …
[ READ MORE → ]Our later-than-normal meeting in May (due to bank holidays) started with the equivalent of our Annual General Meeting, this is the annual process that we go through to appoint officials and any associated tasks. This proved to be straight forward with all duties staying the same. However, Barry Watson decided it was the right time after 12 years of service to step down as a councillor from the PC. I would like to take this opportunity for the work, time and service that Barry has given us over those years. It’s been a pleasure in both of my tenures to have worked with Barry. I …

The atmosphere was really happy and positive. Feedback showed that 95% rated the day as good or excellent, 90% of attendees definitely plan to take carbon reduction action.
The keynote speaker set the tone for the day with a scientific approach along with practical advice based on community experience. During the day we held a total of nine workshops, providing insights into community action from Trawden Shop and Readstone Environment Group, as well as information about …

It’s been a busy month at the Village Hall. We’ve been obtaining quotes for our new flooring and also thinking about the next projects that we need to start to work towards. On the 14th May we hosted the Annual Parish Meeting and it was good to see so many villagers attend the presentation. It was good to look back over the previous 12 months to see what the Parish Council had been up to and to hear about what the WI and Chapel had been up to as well.
Later this year we’ll be hosting a events night on the 7th September with the help …
