Barley Parish Council
Family Fun Day, Barley Chapel, Planning...
For all those who attended the Summer Family Fun Day on Saturday 7th September on the village green you will know what a success it was. The weather was warm and dry and the people came out to enjoy the occasion. We had sports events including all sorts of races and activities for the family to enjoy including hook a duck, splat the rat, a duck race, welly wanging and much more including craft stalls and a dog agility show. The Cabin was serving hot and cold foods and the WI was selling tea, cakes, and crafts.

The fete concluded with the Barley Classic Duck Race with over 500 at the Starting Gun. As ever it was a great finale with lots of people at the start and finish line along with lots of wailing as ducks got stuck and hollering as others swam furiously towards the finish line.
The festivities continued into the evening at the Village Hall with 55 residents attending the annual curry, quiz and raffle night which raised several hundred pounds for the Events Committee and Barley Village Hall. The food was supplied by Paula from The Cabin and it was excellent! The quiz was created by Phil Hartley, and read out by Sheena Umpleby and Claire Grimshaw who did a stellar job. And thanks to all who supported the event.
There are so many to thank for bringing this all together but it is pleasing to see the Barley Events Committee, the Village Hall Committee, the Chapel, the WI and the Cabin all playing some part in putting on a successful event and community social for us. Many thanks to the individuals who put their time into this and we look forward to the next one.
The emergency meeting to discuss the future of Barley Chapel was held on 28 August and over 40 residents attended. The first action is for the Chapel to enrol 13 members so that the Methodist Circuit will keep the chapel open; if 13 members cannot be found by December the Chapel will probably close and be sold. There were many encouraging suggestions on how funding can be raised to undertake essential repairs and there is optimism monies can be raised providing the membership target can be achieved.
Parish Council matters – a Certificate of Lawful development for 5No properties at Barley House Farm was approved by PBC and an application for solar panels at Ogden Hill Farm was refused by PBC because they considered the scale of the solar panels upon the roofs of three buildings would look out of place in the wider landscape.
Finally, if you are interested in joining the PC we have a vacancy and you will find details on the notice board outside the village hall; the closing date is 2nd October. Please give me a call if you are interested and want to know more.
