This evocative opening line from John Keats’ poem Ode to Autumn came to mind recently when I looked across the valley towards Pendle Hill from Spen Heights Farm. Could I see it? Not on your nelly! Shrouded in true Mist Over Pendle fashion, I couldn’t even see St Mary’s sitting in its shadow. But, of course, I knew the hill was there – solid, permanent, majestic, mysterious, inviting.
It occurs to me that that’s not such a bad way to think about God: at once unseen, like mist-muffled Pendle Hill but, in majestic and mysterious ways, ever-present.

For all those who attended the Summer Family Fun Day on Saturday 7th September on the village green you will know what a success it was. The weather was warm and dry and the people came out to enjoy the occasion. We had sports events including all sorts of races and activities for the family to enjoy including hook a duck, splat the rat, a duck race, welly wanging and much more including craft stalls and a dog agility show. The Cabin was serving hot and cold foods and the WI was selling tea, cakes, and crafts.

[ READ MORE → ]The next event to look forward to will celebrate Halloween and take place over the weekend of 26th/27th October.
This event will include a pumpkin festival and a best dressed house competition. The school will be included in the pumpkin competition. The deadline for submissions will be midday on the 26th October. There will be vouchers from local businesses for the best dressed houses and a family chocolate hamper for the pumpkin competition. There will be a small cost for entry to the competitions.
To follow this there will be a village bonfire in early November.

[ READ MORE → ]If prevention is better than cure, potholes are a case in point. On average, motorists each spend £120 per year fixing tyres damaged by potholes – often much more. Since 2018, UK drivers have spent £9.5 billion on vehicle repairs thanks to potholes.
The dangerous condition of Blacko Bar Road remains a concern, particularly as we head into winter. We’ve reported potholes along the full stretch of the road, along with the waterlogged surface and treacherous “ice-rink” bus route in winter towards the end nearest Blacko.

The final results of the Best Kept Village contest are announced on October 15th, where hopefully Roughlee will be crowned Champions after 2 recent Reserve awards. To celebrate the effort of the FORA team which is jointly led by Ian Mortimer and Meg Davey we have decided to have a fundraiser to help with costs towards the 2025 contest and thank all those who put great time and effort in making Roughlee the top …
[ READ MORE → ]On Saturday 7th September, The Hall held their annual Curry night, this time with help and support from the Barley Events Committee. 55 locals gathered for a night of entertainment including a three course Indian meal, quiz and raffle. Lots of money was raised for both the Village Hall and Events Committee that will be reinvested in to the Hall and to the Events Committee for future events. The first meeting was well attended with visitors going home with many prizes and free gifts generously donated by LBS Lanlee and Conker.
The speaker Kathryn Hoche from Montford Cottage gardening presented us with many solutions to garden more sustainably and create environments for our wildlife.
Next meeting is Dr Chris Mortimer from the Hardy Plant Society at St Marys Church 7pm on Tuesday 17th November.
Plant swap table – bring a plant or two of what grows well in your garden and swap for another which is proven survivor in our Pendle climate!
This year we have welcomed 9 EYFS pupils to St Mary’s, all of whom have quickly settled and are enjoying school life.
It is looking like it will be another busy but exciting year ahead. Our after school clubs started the first week back and have been very well attended – the children are especially enjoying the yoga class! On 6th September we joined thousands of children from all around the UK for a very special live online welcome-back assembly led by Picture News. In light of the riots and unrest during the holidays, they discussed British values and the importance of celebrating our differences. We …
[ READ MORE → ]Friends of Newchurch School are holding their annual fashion show to raise funds for St Mary’s CE Primary Academy. This year it will be held at Barley Village Hall on the 10th October 2024.
Tickets are £15 and include a catwalk showcasing clothes by EQ Woman of Clitheroe, a delicious supper, music and a raffle. We will also have a bar and pop-up shops from EQ Woman, Wardrobe by Simone of Whalley and Templa Spa.

The Forest of Bowland National Landscape is going to feature as a major hub in a £2M ground-breaking national art project, Nature Calling, which is funded by Arts Council England, the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) and National Landscapes in England.
Working with writer, rapper and performer OneDa, and artist Rob St John, the National Landscape team will creatively engage with young people from Burnley and Nelson to collaborate, explore, and connect with nature.

This means that anyone with a physical document proving their immigration status needs to register for an eVisa. Everyone must transfer to an eVisa – even children.
The deadline for this is 31st December 2024.
Lancashire Refugee Integration Team have been working to get the message out – please pass this information on through your networks.
Step-by-step guidance is available on the Lancashire County Council website, and support clinics are being held around Lancashire to offer support for anyone applying for their eVisa.
