Roughlee Parish Council

Seniors' Lunch, Defibrillator, Drains & Sinkholes, Thanks...

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2025.

I am guessing that whilst reading this month’s edition, that you will be either feeling sorry for yourself due to over indulgence in the last few days, glad it’s all over or not looking forwards to returning to work in the the near future.

During December we hosted our annual Seniors’ Christmas Lunch which I believe from the comments received was a success. My thanks must go out to the extended team (Shoppers, Table Dressers, Servers, Pot Washers and the after party Cleaning Team) and of course you for attending.

Please be reassured that whilst the Bay Horse is currently closed, the defibrillator outside is working fine and is being regularly monitored and checked. The Circuit (the national defibrillator network) is also being kept updated so that ambulance services are aware of its location and ready status.

I am pleased to report that with help of our representatives on Pendle Borough Council progress is being made in respect of the drains at the Pub and the sink hole on the river bank going towards North Farm. Representatives from the environmental team have visited the drain near the pub and have escalated it with United Utilities; red dyes has been put down selected drains to try to locate the source of the problem. So don’t panic if you see red water on the road. Regarding the sink hole, LCC engineers have been on site and acknowledged the severity of the problem. This is not a quick fix and cannot be started until at least June next year due the complexity of working permits and a specialist diving team to complete the work. Whilst nothing has been said yet, I am expecting a road closure whilst the work is carried out. I will keep you informed with updates when we have them.

Being on the Parish Council does have its moments, especially when it comes down to planning matters. We as custodians of the village do have difficult decisions to make, which on the whole I believe we get right. Sometimes though, matters do end up escalating through the planning and legal systems. When this happens it’s taken out of our hands and we are no longer able to influence matters.

Lastly, I would like to thank my fellow Parish Councillors for their support over the last 12 months, the Village Centre Committee for all of the work that they put into the many successful events that have been held this year, the FORA team for making the village look so splendid and finally you (our community) for supporting us.

Next meeting Monday 6th January 2025, 7pm at the Village Centre.
