Brian Nelson, New Houses, Rookery, Ceramic Tiles, RVC Transfer...
It is with great sadness that we begin this month’s news by reporting the passing of Brian Nelson. Brian served on the Parish Council for 10 years, joining in 2002, with the final five years of his service as Chair. He was a stalwart of our community and played a key role in the development of the Village Centre building, particularly the kitchen facilities that continue to serve residents today. Brian’s dedication and commitment to the village will be remembered by many. Our thoughts and condolences are with Sandra and all of Brian’s family and friends at this difficult time.
On a more routine note, planning matters have dominated the Parish Council’s work this month.
The planning application for two properties on the green space opposite Straitgate Cottages has generated considerable interest within the village. Although the principle of development on this site has previously been approved, many residents have raised concerns about the current application. The Parish Council has submitted its own comments and objections to Pendle Borough Council’s Planning Department and has requested that the application be determined at a public meeting of the Barrowford and Western Parishes Committee. This is expected to take place at the committee’s September meeting. Anyone is welcome to attend these meetings, although anyone wishing to address the committee must register to speak in advance.
We have also received a retrospective planning application relating to ‘the erection of a dwelling’ at The Rookery on Ridge Lane. This is a slightly unusual case, as the property was approved under the restriction of operating as a holiday let, which has been the case for around the past 10 years. The owners are now seeking retrospective permission for it to have been built as a permanent residence without restrictions.
Many of you will already have noticed the beautiful new ceramic tiles installed on the walls opposite the school. These were created by pupils following a foraging walk, during which they selected the plants that have since been embossed onto the tiles. They are a wonderful addition to the village, and we now just need some more favourable weather to complete the planting beneath them. Our sincere thanks go to Andre Smaile for generously giving his time, expertise and materials to install these fantastic pieces.
Finally, the transfer of ownership of the Village Centre buildings and the associated land from Pendle Borough Council to the Parish Council is now complete. The final legal documents have been signed and the transaction is formally completed, marking an important milestone for the village.
