Grants, Speeding, Gardening, Football Tournament & BBQ (12 Sept)
In August we were delighted to be awarded a grant of £1,894 by Barrowford & Western Parishes Committee towards our new information boards in each of the three villages, and also to receive a £2,800 legacy grant from Pendle Borough Council, which we would like to use to fund heritage gateway signs at village entry points, as part of new vehicle speed reduction initiatives. Thank you to all residents who completed our speed survey, gathering feedback about concerns and ideas on speeding – a discussion will be held at our next meeting on Monday 14th September and residents are welcome to come along to contribute.
The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed the newly replaced litter bin on Spenbrook Road in Newchurch (thanks again to B&W), the concrete spill on the road in Newchurch which was captured on CCTV enabling us to identify and contact the company responsible, and the road surface repairs in Sabden Fold, which despite falling far short of expectations, at least constitute an initial response to resident and Parish Council letters of complaint to LCC.
Plenty of gardening has been underway in August, including the great job Pendle Borough Council did clearing the path from Gorrell Close up to the school. Thanks also to residents who worked to remove the moss from this path which would undoubtedly have turned into a slip hazard when the rain returns this autumn. The nettles causing a problem on footpath 20 by Spenbrook Mill have been removed, and the licences for the two green waste bins belonging to GBPC have been renewed so they will be emptied again (please note these are for Parish Council use only and residents should use their own green waste bins).
We’re gearing up for the Annual Goldshaw Booth Football Tournament and BBQ, kindly sponsored by Anthony Dawson Associates, on Saturday 12th September on the Spenbrook football pitch at 2pm. Please come along to cheer on your village team and enjoy the kid’s match and a free BBQ. Other dates for your diaries: the Tai Chi sessions have been well-attended, and the last one is on Sunday 6th September at 11am. The GBPC Bonfire will be held on Thursday 5th November and we hope to provide a hot supper in St Mary’s Church this year, and the Christmas Light Extravaganza Switch-on and Santa’s Grotto will be on Saturday 5th December – more details to follow.
Finally, it’s hard to believe that Councillor Kathleen Wilkinson has been voluntarily maintaining the village toilets single-handedly for over 60-years! What an outstanding contribution to village life, for which we are extremely grateful, thank you Kathleen! Going forward, maintenance of the toilets will be undertaken by Councillors on a rota basis, in conjunction with Adrian and Maureen from Witches Galore.
