Barley Parish Council

Barley Chapel, Planning, Whitehough road, Turning Area

Back in August 2024 an emergency meeting to discuss the future of Barley Chapel was held and over 40 residents attended. The first action is for the Chapel to enrol 13 members so that the Methodist Circuit will keep the chapel open; the chapel now has 17 members. The next task was to raise funds for urgent repairs and about £50k has been raised to date and we are now at the stage that the priority repairs have been completed. The areas with dry rot have been replaced and a new roof installed at the back of the chapel. Volunteers have been involved …

Goldshaw Booth Parish Council

Grants, Speeding, Gardening, Football Tournament & BBQ (12 Sept)

In August we were delighted to be awarded a grant of £1,894 by Barrowford & Western Parishes Committee towards our new information boards in each of the three villages, and also to receive a £2,800 legacy grant from Pendle Borough Council, which we would like to use to fund heritage gateway signs at village entry points, as part of new vehicle speed reduction initiatives. Thank you to all residents who completed our speed survey, gathering feedback about concerns and ideas on speeding – a discussion will be held at our next meeting on Monday 14th September and residents are welcome to come along …

Roughlee Parish Council

Benches, Defib training (22 Sept), Planning

It seems everyone has been making the most of the superb August weather, as there’s not a great deal to report this month. The benches at the bus stop opposite the pub have been taken away for refurbishing. What looked like a simple job turned out to be quite the workout for the removal team—each bench weighed around 100kg, and the chaps involved were not exactly in their twenties. With luck, by the time you read this, they’ll have recovered, hit the gym, and returned the benches to their rightful place. A big thank‑you to Peter Sulway for carrying out the refurbishment work.

Roughlee Village Centre

Donation, Dia de los Muertos (7 Nov), Table Tennis & Pétanque

Graham Hill from Roughlee Village Centre Committee was pleased to be able to go to Derian House Children’s Hospice and present them with a cheque for £2000. The much needed funds were raised from profits relating to the Music, Beer and Gin Festival held at the village centre earlier in the year and from the generous donations from a number of individuals who sponsored a barrel. Thank you from the committee to all those who turned up over the three days, those who donated and to those who gave up their time to make the event a great success.

  • Pendle Forest History Group – Wed 16th Sept, 7.30pm at Barley Village Hall – Geoff Crambie will be giving a talk for the group titled “A Tribute to Wilfred Spencer Colne Librarian from1948 to1959” – his life in pictures and his work to save Colne’s historic buildings.   • Pendleside Gardeners Club Tues 15th Sept, 7pm at Barley Village Hall – The Pendle Mushroom Company with Adrian Rose. £5 includes refreshments. All welcome.
  • Barley WI – Wed 2nd Sept, 7.30pm at Barley Village Hall – We are looking forward to hearing about the work of the North West Blood Bikes. They are a group of volunteers who respond to calls from the NHS and dispatch motorcycle riders to collect and deliver urgently needed items. Start time is 7.30pm – if it’s your first time come a little earlier then we can get you settled in.
  • Pendle Patchers – Tues 8th and 22nd Sept, from 1pm at Barley Village Hall – Our picture this month is of Audrey Weatherill, on the left, displaying one of her recently completed quilts. Audrey founded the Pendle Patchers group almost 18 years ago and she will be celebrating her 90th birthday at the beginning of September. We wish Audrey all the very best and thank her for her enthusiasm and tenacity in starting our group, along with all her other contributions to the life of Barley Village Hall.     Join members of the North West Fungus Group for this early autumn foray in the grounds of Browsholme Hall.

    Suitable for anyone with an interest in natural history – no previous knowledge of the fungal kingdom needed.  Please note that we will not be collecting fungi during this event.

    Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.

    Approximately 1.5 miles. Walking will be on a mix of surfaced tracks, woodland paths and grass. Paths may be uneven and muddy in places.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

My name is Heesoo Warner, and I am the new curate who joined St Mary’s and St Thomas’ in July. Before training for ministry, I worked in education, and I have always enjoyed languages and the way words help us understand the world around us.

Over the next few weeks life at St Mary’s Church becomes a bit busier after what we hoped was a lovely summer for you all. We have some great events coming up which we hope will be enjoyable for the whole community.

To celebrate the closing days of summer we have a Heritage Day on Saturday 12th telling the story of our church with Geoff Forsett. Pendleside Repair Café Returns!

5 Sept, 10.30am-1pm at Barley Chapel

There is plenty to look forward to this September as the Pendleside Repair Café returns to the recently renovated Barley Chapel Hall on Saturday 5th September, from 10.30am to 1pm.

The Repair Café has been going from strength to strength, with an amazing 40 repairs completed over the last two months. Every repair means something gets a new lease of life rather than ending up in the bin helping to save money, reduce waste and keep useful items in use.

A Massive Thank You!

What a difference a community can make when everyone pulls together!

We are absolutely delighted to share the news that Barley Chapel Hall is now completed and we could not be more thrilled with the result.
What has been achieved is a wonderful reminder of the strength, kindness and community spirit we have here in Barley. The Chapel Hall has been given a new lease of life, ready to welcome people for services, community activities, events, the Repair Café and so much more.
