Barley Parish Council

Remembrance Service, Diary Dates, Playground, Turning Area updates...

The annual Remembrance Service at Barley Village turning area will be on Sunday 8th November starting at 10.45am. Everybody is welcome to join the service which is always made especially poignant through the stories of Barley residents who made unimaginable sacrifices during times of conflict. There will be the usual laying of wreaths and flowers, 2 minutes silence, bugle playing of the last post, and refreshments at the Chapel afterwards. In addition to the service, the remembrance flag will be erected on the flag post at the start of November and taken down on the 12th.

Other upcoming dates for your diaries are:

Goldshaw Booth Parish Council

Bonfire (5 Nov), SPID, Police meeting, Playground, New Signs...

As the clocks go back and autumn sets in, we look forward to some warming community spirit at the Goldshaw Booth Parish Council bonfire and pie and pea supper on Thursday 5th November and the Christmas Light Extravaganza Switch-on and Santa’s Grotto with hot turkey sandwiches on Saturday 5th December. Both events are free for local residents but donations on the night would be most welcome to cover the cost of the food. We would also be very grateful for donations of tombola prizes which can be dropped off at St Mary’s Church.

Our ambition to purchase a SPID device by applying for grant funding has …

Events in Barley

Dates in Nov for your diary...

  • Pendle Forest History Group – Wed 18th Nov, 7.30pm at Barley Village Hall – Business meeting and items of interest. Members £2, visitors £3. Email
  • Pendleside Gardeners Club Tues 17th Nov, 7pm at Roughlee Village Centre – The topic is Gardening for Wildlife by Lancashire Wildlife Trust. A great chance to learn from the experts that increasing biodiversity is the answer to many of our gardening challenges. All welcome – £5 inc refreshments
  • Pendleside Repair Cafe Sat 7th Nov, 10.30am to 1pm at Barley Chapel – A busy morning at Barley Chapel! Things have certainly been getting fixed at our monthly get-together! The coffee machine is working again, the table lamp is shining, knives are sharp, garden tools are cutting, jumpers have lost their holes, jewellery has been repaired, radios are making a noise and even the dogs have warmer coats! It’s amazing what can be sorted with a bit of skill, patience and a helping hand. We’re always happy to also receive old pens for recycling, and there’s never any shortage of cake! This month we were particularly pleased to welcome the Pendle Patchers and some other lovely visitors. As always, there is plenty of chat, laughter, cake and a few jobs ticked off the list. We meet on the first Saturday of every month at Barley Chapel. Bring along something that needs fixing, or just come for a cuppa and a catch-up. Everyone is welcome – and new volunteers are always very welcome too!
  • Barley WI – Wed 4th Nov, 7.30pm at Barley Village Hall – What a fantastic year for our WI. Our AGM was wonderful – celebrating what makes our club so special – our fabulous members and dedicated committee! And what a lot we have to celebrate… Our membership has grown to 66! We’ve celebrated birthdays from 21 to 90! We have had 11 meetings plus an opportunity to meet up nearly every week! And an AMAZING £5,500 has been donated to local charities! New members are welcome to come and join us – November 4th is the Barley WI Craft Night, the writers favourite meeting of the year – where we sit around large tables – chat, cake and learn a new skill. The first three meetings at Barley WI are free so you can try us out first to make sure you like it.
  • Pendle Patchers – Tues 10th and 24th Nov, from 1pm at Barley Village Hall – As you can see from our picture, patchwork doesn’t have to be made from material. One of our group recently completed knitting her 6th blanket this year! Some members of the Patchers group will be at the Repair Cafe in Barley on Saturday 7th November so please pop in if you want some ideas about what you can do with your scraps of wool or pieces of material. As usual, our group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at the village hall, so you are welcome to visit us there if you are unable to get to the Repair Cafe. For more information, contact Gil Beeke 01282 602449

A big thank you to everyone who supported our Car Boot Sale on 17th October. We are delighted to announce that £640 was raised, which included a very generous donation of £200. We are extremely grateful to everyone who donated, had a stall, came along to browse and buy, or helped in any way to make the event such a success.

All funds raised will go towards the second phase of the essential building work required at the chapel. Your continued support is greatly appreciated and will help us to preserve and maintain our chapel for the future.

Our next Car Boot Sale will be held on …

Notes from St Mary’s

Remembering & Safeguarding Sunday

Remembering

As someone who grew up in South Korea, I have often noticed how distinctive November is in Britain. In South Korea, there is no All Souls’ Day, Guy Fawkes Day, or Remembrance Sunday. South Koreans certainly remember the dead and honour those who have sacrificed for the nation, but these reminders are spread throughout the year. In Britain, however, November seems to gather these acts of remembrance together. We remember loved ones on All Souls’ Day, a national deliverance on Guy Fawkes Day, and the fallen on Remembrance Sunday. It is a month that invites us to pause and remember.

I was initially surprised by Guy …

St Mary’s Church Services

Nov 2026 Services

St Mary’s is a friendly, active church with regular and accessible services. A warm welcome is guaranteed. All our services end with tea, coffee, a biscuit or a piece of cake and a chance to get to know each other better.

Through November the theme of many of our services is one of remembrance. In this season at the end of the Church’s year, we remember the lives of those who have died in faith and pray for their families. We remember those who gave their lives in war for our freedom and in the weeks running up to Advent we remember that as Christians we …
