“Would you write a column for the Parish newsletter?” “What me?” I asked. Feeling relatively new to ‘churchgoing’ I wasn’t sure I’d have anything notable to share. However the response was, “just write about why you go to church.” So here goes…
I’ve had fits and starts of attending church over the years. At one point to support the Beaver Scout group I used to lead, and on other occasions because it’s what’s expected when you have or seek to have your child attend a local church school. Yes – I’m one of those parents! It’s a contentious subject I know…
But what I’d like to share …

The service is well attended and so it should be, all are welcome and refreshments will be served in the Chapel afterwards. The Council will be flying the Armed Forces Flag prior to the event and after the event flags will be taken down and stored until the spring.

[ READ MORE → ]As I write October has proved to be one of the quieter months in the village. The “wall” has finally been finished and the road open as normal, with the bus service being reinstated. A long drawn out repair, but, I think worth it, as the new wall looks very well and will look even better when it has “weathered” in.
Our BKV team were represented at the awards ceremony where we came worthy runners up to Grindleton. Roughlee Village Centre was joint runner up in the Public Building category (out of 24 entries). The Bay Horse came joint 7th in Public House category (31 entries). …

Bowland is a special place for many people; whether they live in this beautiful area or have visited with family and friends over the decades.
Hetty Byrne, Sustainable Tourism Officer with the AONB said, “The Forest of Bowland is often called a hidden gem …
[ READ MORE → ]What a fantastic first half term we’ve had! By the time you’re reading this, our children should have had a lovely week off school and be back in ready to start Autumn Term 2 and preparing for lots of Christmas fun.

The next meeting is on Wednesday 15th November at Tosside and will focus on Water, Woodlands and Natural Flood Management. If you have any neighbours or friends that have just moved to the area, or who might not be aware of this newsletter, please can you mention Parish News to them. We’re now on 720 email subscribers across Barley, Newchurch and Roughlee so are definitely reaching the majority of households, but it’s an ongoing job to let people know when there’s no longer a physical copy being delivered and not everyone will see the adverts on noticeboards. Thanks for your help!

The tradition of carving faces into vegetables dates back to the Celts. As part of their autumnal celebration, they wanted to light the way to their homes for the good spirits, so they carved faces into vegetables such as turnips and squash.
