You'll be sent a monthly newsletter on the 1st of each month. The Annual Parish meeting attracted 40 residents in May and there were presentations from the Women’s Institution (Sue Statham), the Village Hall (Tom Cosway), the Chapel (Rosemary Connor) and me on behalf of the Parish Council. All contributors were able to reflect on some of the key events over the last year and their plans for the coming year; it is always fascinating to hear of things you had no idea about.
The Council presented an update on parking management in Barley over the last four years to address congestion and inconsiderate parking (with associated hazards) including the recent introduction on parking enforcement on Cross Lane …

Many thanks to all the residents who turned out for our Annual Parish Meeting and the screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing, exploring the climate and nature crisis. Everyone agreed that the film was extremely thought-provoking and that everyone in the UK should have an opportunity to see the film on prime-time TV – we will be lobbying our MP Jonathan Hinder for this to happen. During the subsequent discussion, support was expressed for the new repair shop and café in Barley, expanding our current recycling scheme and possibly setting up a residents’ food buying group with the wholesale cooperative Suma. If you’re interested in …

During May we held our annual parish gathering in the village centre. It proved to be a very interesting evening, with talks from Ruth White and Tina Manning about the Repair Shop being held in Barley, currently on a monthly basis. I hadn’t realised that this is part of an international movement, aimed not only at repairs and recycling, but also at promoting the social aspects of community life.
Claire Milligan then told us about the “Lancashire Tweed” project, which aims to secure a fairer deal for local farmers for their sheep fleeces, with a view to turning them into a true Lancashire Tweed. I offered …

The funding will enable essential repairs to the Chapel Hall roof, together with treatment for dry rot, helping to preserve and protect this much-valued community building for years to come. Work is scheduled to commence on 15th June, marking an important step forward after much planning and preparation.
Before the contractors can begin, volunteers are needed to help prepare the hall. Assistance would be greatly appreciated on Thursday 11th June, when furnishings will need to be removed from the …

My time at St Mary’s Church began on Christmas Eve of 2024.
My son Richard and his father David Hutchinson had been involved throughout the year in work carried out to make a Narthex at the back of St Mary’s Church. The making of the Narthex was to be able to make the space a more useful space, which can be rented out. Also, for it to be used to host tea and cakes throughout the summer months, once a month.
David and I attended the 2024 Christmas Eve service. We received a warm welcome from everybody. We both found something special at St Mary’s and continued …

As we start June the Church moves from celebrating lots of festivals, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost and Trinity to a season often called ‘Ordinary Time’. It’s called Ordinary Time because it was a season for teach and building up the church. Churches during this time are decorated green as a sign of the life of the church and its teaching. We are about to start a series of teachings running up to the summer which is called WHAT DID THE EARLY CHURCH DO FOR US…?
We will look at a series of events that happened in the book of Acts as the church was established. We will …

We’ve had a jam-packed start to our Summer Term!
We started this half-term with a fantastic trip to the World Museum in Liverpool. Highlights included the mummies and the dinosaurs. Our Infant children started their swimming lessons with all the class achieving at least award 1 and completing their water safety certificate. The whole school also took part in Bikeability with Go Velo – children learned to ride their bikes with no stabilisers and learned how to ride on the road safely. The children have learnt about a range of topics including baptism, the Vikings, sewing, circuits and minibeasts. The Year 6s completed their SATs and …
[ READ MORE → ]We have enjoyed a truly fantastic first half of the Summer Term here at Newchurch St Mary’s. The sunshine has brought plenty of smiles, and our children have been incredibly busy both inside and outside the classroom. Here is a glimpse of what we have been up to!
In the Classroom
Key Stage 1: Our younger children have been exploring their poetic sides, learning to recite The Owl and the Pussycat. In Geography, they’ve been designing islands and drawing maps of the playground with brilliant ideas on how to improve it. We also celebrated World Bee Day, which included a very special treat when one of …
