Your official monthly newsletter for the Pendle villages of Barley, Newchurch, Roughlee, Sabden Fold & Spenbrook.
No spam. You'll be sent a monthly newsletter on the 1st of each month.I trust everyone enjoyed the great weather we had in late June, not quite the heatwave some got but certainly a heatwave in these parts. At the time of writing, we are all watering bedding plants and watching the grass and weeds grow before our eyes. For anyone able to put a little time into maintaining the village, please help us keep on top of the weeds, litter and general tidiness when you can.
Works at Upper Ogden Reservoir are moving along in the good weather and the increase in the height and thickness of the wave wall on top of the dam is shown below, …

Despite June being a month of weather extremes, from washout to heatwave, it has been a productive month for Goldshaw Booth Parish Council. Our main focus has been the development of a new website which we are pleased to announce is now live! It has been designed to enhance communication and ensure that our online presence is compliant with the latest standards and regulations.
Our website content is now accessible to all members of our community, and our domain name is a .gov.uk address which builds our online credibility and reinforces our dedication to providing official and reliable information to our residents. To further support our …

Pendle Borough Council has agreed for us to begin the asset transfer process for the Village Centre, garden, and car park. Solicitors have now been appointed, and we are moving through the legal steps required to complete the transfer. We are being encouraged to progress this as swiftly as possible, so we anticipate the process will be finalised in the near future.
Our thoughts are with Maureen Davies, following the passing of her husband Jim at the end of May. Jim lived in the village his entire life and will be fondly …

The Pendleside Repair Café has had a whirlwind few months, and it’s all thanks to the incredible generosity, energy and expertise of our community. It’s been so busy behind the scenes getting everything launched that we haven’t properly thanked everyone who has donated cakes, their time, their knowledge and their guidance. We’ve needed each and every one of you, and because of you, the Repair Café has already become a real success.
Our June event was buzzing with activity, with plenty of repairs being tackled by our brilliant volunteers. The feedback was heart‑warming, with many visitors saying this is exactly what our villages need. That encouragement …

July marks one of our biggest events at Newchurch St Mary’s. Since the early 1950s we have celebrated Rushbearing. It is an ancient festival dating back to the middle ages. Traditionally, the floors of churches and homes were often made from packed earth. Floors like these would have been cold in winter and not particularly clean. So, rushes were cut and woven into matts for homes and churches. These would have offered some insulation and kept things cleaner, but they needed to be replaced over time. So ahead of the Rushbearing homes and churches were cleaned in preparation for new rushes to be brought in.

St Mary’s is a friendly, active church with regular and accessible services. A warm welcome is guaranteed. All our services end with tea, coffee, a biscuit or a piece of cake and a chance to get to know each other better. Our services up to the end of July are for asking the question ‘What did the early Church do for us..?’ and our bible readings are from the book of Acts which focuses on the life of the early church. Through this series we hope to find a model of life as a church that we can follow. Do come and join us. Our …

From outdoor adventures to classroom discoveries, our children have truly been living our vision that “ordinary people can choose to be extraordinary.”
Here is a glimpse into what our young people have been up to this month.
In the Classroom
Key Stage 1: Coding, Kindness, and Sacred Spaces

Nature is in crisis across the UK. The numbers of breeding birds, pollinators, and species in general have fallen rapidly in the last 50 years, and wildlife rich habitats are getting smaller, more disconnected and constantly under threat from human activity and climate breakdown. Although the Forest of Bowland is a protected landscape biodiversity is in decline here too.
As part of its action to support nature, designed as part of the new Forest of Bowland management plan, the Forest of Bowland is launching a new Community Nature Fund. You can find out more details and how to apply online here.
This fund will offer …

If you have any neighbours or friends that have just moved to the area, or who might not be aware of this newsletter, please can you mention Parish News to them. We’re now on 800+ email subscribers across Barley, Goldshaw Booth and Roughlee so are definitely reaching the majority of households, but it’s an ongoing job to let people know when there’s no longer a physical copy being delivered and not everyone will see the adverts on noticeboards. Thanks for your help!
