By the time you read this we will have travelled the path to Easter, surrounded by the optimism of the Risen Christ and the brightness and colour of increasingly longer, warmer days. I hope you saw the beautiful daffodils in bloom round the churchyard, planted by children from St Mary’s Academy?
Preparing for the appointment of the next vicar, the Parochial Parish Council (PCC) is drawing up a snapshot profile of the parish for applicants. It is really encouraging to look at all the work going on and record the achievements, whilst acknowledging there is still much to do.

[ READ MORE → ]Over the last month, visitors to Barley Village Hall will have noticed the new wooden panelling works that have now been completed in the lower main hall. This is part of the Committee’s ongoing improvements to the Hall, and the second project to be completed after the new air conditioning that was installed in the two main rooms. The work was completed by Andrew Read Bespoke Joinery Ltd who did a fantastic job from start to finish. We hope you all agree that it looks superb!
The next phases of our improvement plan will include some new flooring in the downstairs corridors and new lighting throughout. …

We have donations of elderberry, gooseberry and raspberry bushes as well as funds for the Gateway to Spenbrook garden and for trees in Sparable wood. Fresh air and exercise followed by brews, butties and buns – what’s not to like? Look out for dates on the FB page.
The Best Kept Village Competition is here again. Last year Sabden Fold was noted as a runner-up. This year, with our new garden team and increased community effort, the Parish might be in with a shot?!
In the last two issues of this publication I have commented on the improving Spring weather, this I obviously got wrong so I apologise and as a consequence have resigned from the Roughlee Weather Forecasting Bureau.
Planning applications seem to have turned into buses, in that we have had none for several months and then three turn up all at once, details listed below. All of these are being given the due consideration that they require.
Work has already ready started to make the village look great again, flower beds are being tidied and one of our community litter picks took place on the 23rd run …

Spring has sprung and Friends of Roughlee Appearance (FORA) will be hosting a fun Beetle Drive on Saturday 27th April from 7.30pm at Roughlee Village Centre. Tickets are £10pp and available from Chris & Steve Worrell at 1 Old Hall Close or on 07924 947003 (closing date Wed 24th April). The event is BYO drinks and glasses but the ticket price does include a delicious pie and pea supper. Definitely not one to be missed!

After 20 years John has decided to step down from the Committee, over the years John has been instrumental in helping complete various projects and helping putting on events. He was always on hand to nip down to help out whenever a problem arose. You’ll be truly missed by the Committee – thank you!
With this in mind, we have some vacancies for some new members to join the Committee. I understand time is valuable these days, especially for those with young families, but we do need a few more …

Along with support from Lancashire County Council we managed to reach our target of £1500, enabling the event to be delivered free of charge. This event is aimed at everyone with an interest in climate change, from those who want to find out how to reduce their carbon footprint at home, to those with an appetite to explore innovative ideas around community energy and transport, recycling and plastic free initiatives.

[ READ MORE → ]‘KEEPING EAST LANCASHIRE in the Picture’ is a new two-year Lancashire Archives and Local History project that will make the wonderful collections of historic photographs in East Lancashire Libraries more accessible. We need volunteers to digitise old photographs so that people can enjoy them online, and at exhibitions and events. We also need help researching the images. Barley Chapel has a service on the first Sunday of the month at it would be lovely to see you at one or all of the services. Pets welcome.
The Chapel is also available to hire with reduced rates for villagers – contact Angie (07967 121031).
If you have any neighbours or friends that have just moved to the area, or who might not be aware of this newsletter, please can you mention Parish News to them. We’re now on 800+ email subscribers across Barley, Goldshaw Booth and Roughlee so are definitely reaching the majority of households, but it’s an ongoing job to let people know when there’s no longer a physical copy being delivered and not everyone will see the adverts on noticeboards. Thanks for your help!
